The news of Patrick’s passing struck like an unexpected hurricane. We are devastated by the passing of a man who truly stood as a colossus in his time. Not one to trumpet himself or revel in accolades, he deserves as much and more. He was as an example of a life well lived; in excellence and in love.
At Dartmouth and beyond, Patrick left a lasting impression on those who were privileged to know him; which speaks to his attributes as a great person, colleague, and friend. Whether exhibiting his soccer skills, playing squash, or simply walking across the Dartmouth Green, Patrick drew people in, seamlessly making friends and nourishing such friendships past graduation.
Despite his towering physical presence, his disarmingly infectious smile and engaging baritone voice endeared him to so many; not to mention his decency as a human being and his penchant for friendliness. Always ready with words of wisdom, Patrick was a colleague who could be relied on for wise counsel when needed; a friend always ready to provide the proverbial shoulder to lean on in times of adversity. With his wit, grace and charm, Patrick made it look so easy that many of us wondered how he managed to negotiate the many terrains of academics, athletics, and other activities, with such grace.
Patrick’s life is also a life of courage. When many would cringe to attempt such a sport, Patrick never having played, decided to play American football in his sophomore year. At a time when many were inclined to stay in the comfort of the corporate world with its secure paycheck, Patrick boldly journeyed into entrepreneurship, becoming a phenomenally successful businessman.
After college, as many other friendships faltered due to distance and busy occupations, Patrick was sure to maintain his network of friendships. He was adamant about attending class reunions, traveling from Ghana to attend. He would deepen old friendships, make new friends, and revitalize stale ones. This was just who he was, ready to welcome everyone with arms wide open.
Patrick’s passing cuts very deep, but we take comfort in the honor of knowing such an endearing personality. Though the pain of having lost him so soon remains, we will wipe our tears in the comfort of a life story that continues in the many beautiful memories he helped create, the friendships he forged, the many lives he touched positively with his warmth and effervescence; and in knowing that the world is a better place because of him.
Rest in Peace, Patrick.
